Petworth and the South Downs Golden Triangle: Where West Sussex Reaches Its Peak

There is a triangle of West Sussex that property people have long referred to in hushed tones. Its three points are Petworth, Midhurst and Haslemere, and the villages that fall within and around it represent, for many buyers, the ideal expression of what the English countryside can be: beautiful, historically rich, well-serviced and within workable reach of London.

Petworth is the most visited of the three. The town is dominated by Petworth House, the National Trust’s great late-seventeenth-century mansion whose grounds were designed by Capability Brown and whose art collection rivals that of many national institutions. The town that has grown up in its shadow is distinguished by an extraordinary concentration of antique dealers and a high street of genuine quality. It is a town that takes objects, craft and aesthetic judgement seriously.

Midhurst and the villages

Midhurst, six miles to the south west, is less visited but no less fine. The remains of Cowdray House sit at its edge as a reminder of the town’s Tudor prominence, and the market town itself holds good schools, independent shops and a racecourse at Goodwood a short drive away that sets a particular tone for the area.

The villages that fall between and around these towns, Easebourne, Lodsworth, Lickfold, Tillington and others, offer some of the most sought-after rural properties in the South East. Farmhouses, converted agricultural buildings, cottages with land, and period houses that in another county would generate national attention: these exist here in number, though not always in the public domain.

Haslemere station on the Surrey border provides a journey to London Waterloo of around an hour.
